COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., March 21 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today on his national daily radio broadcast, Focus on the Family President Dr. James Dobson expressed support for the troops serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and he called our nation to prayer.
Dobson, heard by 8.9 million listeners each week, stated his support for President Bush by saying that the government has a "moral obligation" to stop evil and tyranny.
"America comes as a liberator -- not as a conqueror," Dobson said. "To my knowledge, the U.S. is the first country in history that had the world's most dominant military power, and yet did not use that hegemony to conquer, enslave, and plunder weaker nations. Consider, for example, America's plans to distribute 600,000 tons of wheat and rice to the Iraqi people as well as $100 million allotted for world relief programs."
Saddam Hussein, who has modeled his dictatorship on the personhood of Joseph Stalin, launched chemical attacks in 1988 that killed 5,000 innocent Kurds -- 75 percent of whom were women and children. In addition, he launched a war against Iran that resulted in a million and a half casualties and summarily executed thousands of Iranian prisoners of war during the conflict. He also overran the defenseless country of Kuwait, and fired more than 3 dozen Scud missiles into non-military targets in Israel.
Dobson compared the war to World War II when Adolf Hitler killed millions of innocent people. "Now we are faced with another brutal tyrant," he said. "Saddam Hussein must be stopped. Appeasement of tyrants is never successful."
Regardless of differing personal views on the war, Dobson encouraged listeners to support U.S. troops noting America's past mistakes with Vietnam. "I hope our Congress will be careful," he said, "about what they have to say about our troops in the field."
