If the New York Times conflates Chile (a rather wealthy democratic country that is NOT corrupt by and large), with Guinea, the rag is in a really bad way.

Back in 1981 my Dad was asked to write the cover story for LIFE magazine about the conflict on the West Bank of Israel. They knew going in that my Father was very pro-Israel and that would be his angle on the piece. He would give the history and the conflict, etc. His people were militant Israelis (Meir Kahane). Again, they knew this going in. When he received the galley proofs, not only had they changed quotes, facts, and other things that didn't seem to be important to LIFE magainze, they actually changed the last line to the complete OPPOSITE of what my Dad's thesis was. At this point it was too late to make all the changes he wanted. They did make a few, but Dad was so upset that he took his name off the article. It was printed without his name. However, it was not on the cover of that 1981 issue, a man named Ronald Reagan had been shot the week before and he ended up on the cover.
