I was just noticing the number of Bar Harbor residents arrested. I have been going to Maine, (my birthstate)every summer for the past 20 yrs. staying just outside of Bar Harbor. I live in NYC and remember when I was young, the hippies of the late 60's and early 70's but there hasn't been one here that I've seen in decades. Yet, these hippies (known in Maine as "Granolas") are prevalent in Bar Harbor and love to lounge around in the parks there. They aren't all old folks left over from the 60's either...many are young people who have adopted the hippie mindset. Feels like a time warp when we go there and walk past them in the park.

Bar Harbor was the perfect place last time I was there (1958). Good that the fact of the New England winter will keep it from becoming Key West. Get your little sailboat and forget the world.

We take a couple of day trips down there every summer for the restaurants and bars, but you're right, it is a time warp.

But The Thirsty Whale has good chowda and ice cold beer!
;O)

Maine ain't the same as it used to be..... I got out about 8 years ago. The libs from Mass are buying the state back, one house lot at a time.

It depressed me to see the locals - particularly the ones that I grew up with - attempt to hang on to their way of life amid the influx of granola-chewing, pot-smoking, 'back-to-the-land' liberals that want to drive out all jobs from Maine to keep it 'pristine'. When 'the mill' (doesn't matter which one...) is the only business in town and it shuts down, there's not much in the way of work. Maine used to have an excellent industrial base - shoes, textiles, wood-products (Forster was the only toothpick mill in the country), and believe it or not, eggs. (DeCoster Egg Farms was a huge company). Now, they're all gone thanks to NAFTA and the incredibly hostile business climate that's fomented in Maine by liberals.

Visited with a couple of friends from back home last month. My wife commented on how industrious they were - my friends works two jobs and dives for scallops to supplement his income. His wife works full time as well. My response was that they weren't industrious by choice.....in Maine, that's known as 'just gettin by'.

Was nice to hear the term 'Granolas' though. Been awhile since I've heard that one.
