A senior U.S. official said the raids in and around Baghdad had been intended as “extensive prepping of the battlefield” in the no-fly zone in the south of the country. But the attack was ramped up after U.S. intelligence spotted what was termed a “target of opportunity,” described as a “senior or very senior member of the Iraqi regime.”

U.S. officials told Miklaszewski that the target was Saddam himself. They would not say whether the attack, in which F-117s dropped mammoth GBU-27 “bunker buster” bombs, was successful.

Din't know that the 117 could use this type of weapon, actually I don't think they can.

FB-111s originally carried them, they've all been taken out of service. Something has to carry them and they may have modified them to fit in a F-117A bomb bay.

We're talking two different weapons here. There's the GBU-27, a 2000lb-class bomb carried by the F-117 and which has a hardened version for penetration. Then there's the GBU-28 "Deep Throat" with is the "mammoth bunkerbuster" ... 5000lb based on an 8" howitzer barrel. The -117 can NOT carry the GBU-28. The F-15E and B-2A do ...
