American president George Bush has described the start of war against Iraq as the opening salvo in an operation to "disarm Iraq and to free its people".
Air raid sirens and explosions were heard as dawn broke in Baghdad - at about 2.30am London time.
But so far there has been no major air assault on the city, which is home to six million people.
Sky's David Chater, in Baghdad, said he could hear what sounded like "heavy bombing on the outskirts of the city".
The attack came 90 minutes after after Mr Bush's deadline for Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq passed and began with a cruise missile strike on the Iraqi capital.
In Washington, a senior government official said US forces had launched a missile strike against a "target of opportunity" near Baghdad after US intelligence detected the possibility Iraqi leaders were in the area.
Plan for targeting Iraqi leadership included using F-117 stealth bombers and a handful of cruise missiles, a military official said.
The main frequency of Iraqi state radio appeared to be taken over by the US military as US planes began bombing Baghdad.
"This is the day we have been waiting for," an announcer said in Arabic shortly after the normal Iraqi broadcast went off the air suddenly, within minutes of US air strikes starting.
The new announcer said Saddam Hussein's administration was under attack.
"For the next hour we will be taking dedications. Right now we'll start this thing off with a request from Achmed in Basra. He sends out his love to a very special, sexy lady in Baghdad right now. Here's Marvin Gayle with, 'Let's Get It On.'"
ROFLMAO!!!!
