Jonathan Evans MEP, Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament, today criticised the new Liberal Democrat proposal for a single seat for the European Union in the United Nations. In response to comments made by Graham Watson MEP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Europe, Mr Evans said:
"Charles Kennedy's commitment to defend British interests is worthless. His MEPs broke rank and announced a policy which is consistent with their attempts to surrender every last fragment of British sovereignty.
This policy would mean that the UK would lose its voice on major international events, including decisions on war. Who do the Lib Dems believe should speak for Britain? British views cannot be decided by other nation states.
Recent events show that the very idea of a Common Foreign and Security Policy is a farce, and the notion of giving 15 nations one voice on the international scene is absurd.
This is a typical Liberal Democrat response. One from a party that has never governed and is naive of international affairs."
