Actually, Ramsey Clark was one of LBJ's AG's. I understand LBJ appointed him so that his father, Tom Clark, would retire from the Supreme Court, opening up a slot for Thurgood Marshall.

As was noted already, Clark was LBJ's Attorney General.

President Carter's first Attorney General, Griffin Bell was a conservative Democrat who, IIRC, endorsed Bush. In fact, one of his law partners, Larry Thompson, is now the Deputy Attorney General.
