'To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the Presdient, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.'
President Theodore Roosevelt

Correct, and I am doing as much as I can to foster that debate and discussion. I don't agree with your analogy though.
To: Diplomat
I was talking about my kids on the over and over comment, not her. I didn't think you'd been influenced not to buy based on your earlier comments. Though your stand appears to be on principle and not neccessarly based on an actual like of Country music. Do you even listen to the Dixie Chicks? If I hadn't got married 5 years ago to a good Ohio girl, I wouldn't even know who the Dixie Chicks were.
To: stuartcr
When I listen to Natalie singing a song now that I once upon a time enjoyed, all I hear now is "ashamed George Bush is from Texas" over and over again in my head. Now, why should I continue to support her career?
To: stuartcr
That last post was meant for you.
To: stuartcr
You're an idiot. Now will you buy something from me? Hey, it's only my opinion.
To: stands2reason
You shouldn't, but you should get your hearing checked, and open your mind a little.
To: Diplomat
I have their first 2 albums.
To: stands2reason
You are very eloquent. What is the name of your album, and I will napster it and listen.
To: EaglesUpForever
no need.
so they have been trying to dig up old quotes to justify her shabby, shallow behavior.
anybody recognize how funny it is? s. Maines is using a quote from a President that put Japanese Americans in Internment camps? So President Roosevelt is her guide to conduct? Are we to infer that Our Chick Of Human Rights and Patriotism thinks this Presidential action during war time was in keeping with our American ideals?
the funny thing is she didn't speak out to the American people. she did craven concert filler pandering to a Brit crowd-- a country whose Prime Minister stands shoulder to shoulder with our President.
in addition, she didn't stand by her comments, she went into full retraction mode replete with weasel words.
she should have said," I stand by my statements and I continue to be ashamed of the president." She did not do this. She gave us the Full Lott.
By the way, it is very American to dissent from dissent. We, as free people, have the ability to use our dollars how we so choose. We as a people can not listen to or watch media outlets that feature Ms. Maines.
If all the rest of us are servile dupes and she is a patriotic heroine, than she shouldn't want us in her fan bass.
Isn't what's truly bothering her is that we are independent thinkers? We don't just reward her for her airhead activism. We have resisted the leftist media and Hollyweird lefties and despite their best partisan efforts, we stand with our President and our troops.
All in all, this is a grotesque pr stunt. Simon Renshaw and all of her yes-men need to tell this tart the truth. She is a selfish skank who put her cd sales before her country, and their is and will continure to be consequences
for this shallow seditious act!!
Shame!!

its about silencing dissent.
Who has been silenced? Certainly not that Dixie Chick, Clooney, Streisand, Crow, etc. Count yourself as yet another person who doesn't understand that the First Amendment does not call for the freedom from criticism. You can say whatever you like, and people are allowed to react to it however they like as long as they don't infringe on your rights. The Dixie Chicks do not have a right to the mass purchase of their albums, and people have a right to boycott.
To: stuartcr
What about politicians? So, would you vote for a politician no matter what he says?
Find one quote on this thread that says she doesn't have the right to speak out. I will wait.
To: stands2reason
No.
To: stuartcr
What dissent? Maines' comment was a stupid, personal attack that is not a serious criticism of the president.
Why are you so protective of idiotic statements? Why can't people agree that what she said is ignorant? Perhaps this would free up room in the public discourse for real debate on the pending war with Iraq.

From watching Cops, I would say women like her make about $20 everytime they open their mouths!

Count yourself as yet another person who doesn't understand that the First Amendment does not call for the freedom from criticism. Horsecrap. Im not talking about "criticism". I'm talking about a small group of people, mainly on FR, who post lists of radio stations across the country so that every person can fill out form letter or make phone calls repeating talking points, telling stations hundreds or thousands of miles outside their area that they will boycott the station if they play Dixie Chicks. Its disingenuos, a farce and a fraud.
When DJ's and corporate execs reply, people scream and shout and throw a hissy fit over the fact that they refuse to engage in silencing artists based upon unpopular comments. In this case, the comments have NOTHING to do with the music.
And what is perplexing is that silencing the Dixie Chicks is just the cause of the day, for an unknown reason. These tactics havn't been used to make stations stop playing Sheryl Crow, the Beastie Boys and dozens of other artists who share the opinion of Maines(and have even more unpopular views). Its knee-jerk, feel-good mentality. Its the "hey, Im doing something to support my country", when the thought hasn't even crossed their minds that probably 3/4 of entertainers and half the American people share similar views as the people they specifically criticize.
Barbara Streisand and Alec Baldwin DESERVE ridicule. Heck, even some of Sheryl Crow's comments were extremely ridiculous. Actually, even some of Charlie Daniel's words in that letter were ridiculous. Who cares. No one will six months from now. The DC will still be millionaires.

When asked a political question, Elvis said "Hey, I'm a singer, I don't do polictics". An female airhead media person recently tried to embroil Tiger Woods in the female mess surrounding Augusta National his reply was to the effect that he is a golfer, he will tee it up wherever the rewards and challenges are the highest and he dosen't do politics.
These guys are a LOT smarter than Natalie.

He's an Iranian crossdresser. Is he a crossdresser, or did he just play a crossdresser?
To: rockinonritalin
Sorry I didn't explain better...the dissent I spoke of was that of freepers. I am not protective of anyones statements, I said it was a stupid statement. I originally asked why anyone cares so much about what she said...then it took off, as normal for freerepublic....I'm just keeping it going until I get bored. Personally, I don't see how her personal opinion on politics, has anything to do with their songs.
To: Lee'sGhost
He's an Iranian American....for what that's worth....if his folks were Shah people and fled here then he might be sympathetic to us but I doubt it.
She gives the air of one bossyassed woman...an odd choice for a Persian.
