BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Electronic bugging devices have been discovered at offices used by France and Germany in the building where European Union leaders are due to hold a summit from Thursday, an EU spokesman said on Wednesday. Dominique-Georges Marro, head of the EU council press service, said these were not the only delegations affected and it was not known who had planted the devices.

"I can confirm that in the course of regular inspections, interception devices have been found...which do not only affect France and Germany," Marro told reporters, partially confirming a report in the French newspaper Le Figaro, which said the United States was behind the espionage.

Couldn't possibly be the Iraqis...

Not like they had anything at stake with the French and Germans...

I hope so, though I regret the Germans must be included. Much nicer than the French. As for the French, they must be treated as a Cold War enemy: not with violence, but with everlasting vigilance and suspicion. France and trust must never again be used in the same sentence.

The US should respond: "Nope, they weren't ours. Our surveillance devices are still working 5x5."

5x5 is an old radioman's term meaning the signal strength is a 5 on the vu meter and the signal to noise is at least a 5:1 ratio.

Why should we believe anything these duplicitous creeps say about anything. They probably planted the things themselves.

How true. The French were probably bugging the Germans who were busy bugging the French. Quelle apropos!

Communications are rated on a 1-5 scale for both signal strength & readability. 5 by 5 means tops on both.

Not unless someone of our own tipped them off.

After all "some" of our very own have been doing everything to undermine President Bush.
