The government announces readiness for US-led war in Iraq; parliament expected to issue its decision later today
The Danish government is prepared for the nation to participate in a US-led war in Iraq. So said Social Democratic leader Mogens Lykketoft, Radical Liberal leader Marianne Jelved, and her party colleague, former Foreign Minister Niels Helveg Petersen, after today's meeting in the Prime Minister's Office.
After US President George W. Bush delivered a 48-hour ultimatum to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein late Monday evening, Danish PM Anders Fogh Rasmussen indicated that parliament would shortly make its decision on eventual Danish participation in an Iraq war.
Radical Liberal leader Marianne Jelved is anxious that the government will split the broad-based partnership between the opposition Social Democrats and Radical Liberals on the Iraq issue.
Jelved declared after last night's US ultimatum to Saddam Hussein that the Radical Liberals would not support Danish participation in any war in Iraq without a UN mandate.
"There's nothing to indicate that the government is trying to assemble a broad-based majority. The government has a duty to try to rally a broad majority behind its decision, and everything points to the fact that the government is not inclined to do so. We cannot participate in any war in Iraq, on the existing basis," said Jelved, en route to the first round of negotiations with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister early this morning.
