This is what I love about the catholic church. They abuse an altar boy in the sacristy and then they go out to the pulpit to preach about how the rest of us are going to hell. The percentage of priests who abused teenage boys numbers around 1-2% of all priests.
My guess is that the rate is comparable to most institutional churches or other similar institutions, like the teaching profession.
Should we be shocked that there are sinners in the Church and the Church hierarchy? No. Should we be outraged by every crime and by every cover-up? Yes.
I know the percentage of abusers is small. The majority of priests are very decent people who are devoting their lives to helping others. Unfortunately the coverup mentality (and behavior) has resulted in a further erosion of trust in the institution.
