DENVER A 32-year-old man, who recently returned from a month-long trip to Hong Kong, has been hospitalized with flu-like symptoms at the University of Colorado Hospital.
The hospital has sent specimens from the man to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. The CDC will run tests to see whether the man is suffering from the mysterious Asian flu that has recently caused a worldwide alert.
Experts are now saying the illness is a severe form of pneumonia called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
Hospital spokeswoman Sarah Ellis said the patient is from California and was vacationing in Colorado when he became ill. He went to the hospital Monday evening and has been placed in an isolation unit where he remains in fair condition.
All airborne and contagion precautions have been taken until an more exact diagnosis is made, Ellis said.
Dr. Ned Calonge, the states chief medical officer, said the case is being investigated as a suspect case because the man has flu-like symptoms; a fever; and has traveled recently in Southeast Asia.
