Can anyone define sexual assault??

"Penetration, no matter how slight, is sufficient to complete the offense."

Oh, God! Poor kid. What horrors she endured. And she survived. What a wonderful girl!

I heard a rumor that her full name is "Wanda Wayne Barzee."

I heard it was "Wanda Wayne Lee Barzee" :o)

If this guy was staking her out, you know he had rape on his mind. How horrible.

It is horrible what Mitchell and Barzee did to Elizabeth. It sounds like she was in the worst of conditions that can be imposed on a human.

I am very much disturbed by the great majority of FReepers who slandered and smeared this poor girl and her family. Be honorable men and women, and write retractions.

After watching the DA read off the charges, I was, quite literally, sick to my stomach. What that poor kid had to endure from the time of her kidnapping until the time she was found was hideous. That she survived is truly a miracle--but my dream is that both Mitchell and Barzee are put in general population in prisons near SLC after they're convicted for the Dahmer solution.

Watch the smearers to shift gears and criticize them for RECEIVING UNSOLICITED movie and book proposals.

Unfortunately I bet you are right.

(KSL-TV News) -- Charges against Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee are expected late Tuesday morning.

Eyewitness News has new details of what investigators found at the campsite where the suspects and Elizabeth lived for two months following the kidnapping.

The campsite where the three were staying was up in a canyon, just about three miles from the Smart house. Elizabeth took a helicopter ride Sunday to point out exactly where they were staying, late today we learned what investigators found there.

Investigators first thought they had determined the campsite where Brian Mitchell, Wanda Barzee, and Elizabeth stayed for two months following the kidnapping.

But when Elizabeth boarded a helicopter with investigators Sunday, she reportedly pointed out the “real” site.

Detectives quickly learned the three had stayed underground in a concealed hole Mitchell dug himself or some kind of underground structure. The site was reportedly covered with boards and dirt.

That is why the three were not picked up by infrared cameras during the search in the days following the kidnapping. The heat-sensing camera cannot see through boards. The site was very well concealed so searchers on the ground or in the air never spotted anything out of the ordinary.

Chris Thomas/Family Spokesperson: “THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE SEARCHED THAT CANYON WHO DIDN'T SEE THEM, AND HAVE CARRIED ENORMOUS AMOUNTS OF GUILT, AND CAN'T SLEEP AT NIGHT, THE FAMILY WANTS THEM TO KNOW THAT THEY DID THE RIGHT THING."

"THERE ARE A LOT OF WHAT IF'S ..BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT SHE IS HOME WITH HER FAMILY."

At the site, investigators reportedly found an incredible amount of evidence--possibly the knife used in the kidnapping and a rope. Prosecutors are preparing to file charges against Mitchell and Barzee tomorrow. Today, Smart family members met with prosecutors from the district attorneys office to discuss the case.

Chris Thomas/Family Spokesperson: “THE FAMILY DOES WANT TO SEE JUSTICE IN THIS CASE, THEY BELIEVE MITCHELL AND HIS WIFE SHOULD RECEIVE APPROPRIATE PUNISHMENT FOR THEIR CRIMES AND THAT JUSTICE SHOULD PREVAIL.

Thomas said Monday Elizabeth is doing well and that in time, she may go back to school. But the family is reportedly taking it one day at a time.

I agree, and I knew this poor child never went willingly. We can only hope she'll recover from this ordeal, completely.

It sounded like Wanda was gonna get off easy if she tells prosecutors what she knows.

"Long has suggested that giving his client a light sentence could encourage kidnappers to keep their captives alive. Mitchell's father made a similar appeal, arguing that any punishment should be tempered by the girl's survival. "There's a lot of people that kidnap little kids and murder them," said Shirl Mitchell, 83. "He took care of the girl and she came back in good health."

Now there is some sick thinking. A life sentence is appropriate in this case. Those that murder them should get the death penalty. People who are evil enough to commit these crimes will not be deterred by going soft on them.

Rather than an apology from the bashing freepers, let's put them in a hole in the ground covered with a board, violated, and threatened at knifepoint. See if that doesn't break them like this poor girl was broken.

Well put.

Be honorable men and women, and write retractions.

Maybe they will after they wipe all the layers of egg off their faces.

Don't stay up late waiting. No apologies will be forthcoming. Instead, you can expect more of the same criticisms of the Smarts to come. Such people who blame the victim never apologize.

It sounded like Wanda was gonna get off easy if she tells prosecutors what she knows.

If she flips. If she doesn't--and as long as she's under Mitchell's thrall, she won't--Elizabeth has to testify.

If Barzee ever gets away from Mitchell, my bet is that it's not going to be until she's convicted and in prison, not sitting in a county jail where Mitchell is in proximity to her. Then again, if Barzee is dumb enough to keep chatting to her friends directly under a sign that says, "your conversations may be monitored," they may not even have to give her a deal for Wanda to sing. All they'll need is the video tape.
