In Morris, no change in the stances on war By Bryan Dunleavy, Daily Record
Local opinions on President Bush's Monday night speech giving Saddam Hussein and his regime 48 hours to leave Iraq or face military action were mixed, splitting along individual stances on the wisdom of going to war.
"I think it was very straightforward," said John Mongrella, whose brother, Garrett, was killed in battle during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. "(Bush) reiterated that we've exhausted all political and diplomatic means."
Like Bush, Mongrella feels war is justified and victory will be quick and decisive.
"I feel we have no other choice but to send the troops innow," said Mongrella, a Rockaway Township resident. U.S. Rep. Rodney P. Frelinghuysen, R-Harding, was impressed with Bush's strong tone. Frelinghuysen also said Hussein has had ample time to remedy the situation.
"(Bush) is giving (Hussein) 48 more hours even though he's already had more than four months," Frelinghuysen said.
Frelinghuysen said he is in full support of military action against Hussein.
"I agree with the President," he said in a phone interview. "The risk of inaction could bring more serious consequences."
Others were not so pleased with Bush's statements.
"(Bush) doesn't make the case for massive bombing and invasion of Iraq," said Madelyn Hoffman, director of New Jersey Peace Action.
Hoffman said Bush is essentially thumbing his nose at many who oppose war.
"I'm appalled that Bush will ignore opposition to war within this country and the opinions of people around the world who are against the war," Hoffman said.
Hoffman is also concerned with the increased national level of alert for terrorism which took effect recently.
"If there's such a fear and concern for retaliation that the alert is increased, it seems to me the one way to deal with it is not by invading Iraq," Hoffman said.
Ali Chaudry, a member of the American Islamic Academy in Boonton, was also dismayed by Bush's comments.
"It makes me very sad," said Chaudry, a professor at Raritan Valley Community College. "War means killing a lot of innocent people to achieve a goal and that is not justified."
Chaudry is worried about the backlash a war against Iraq could produce.
"I'm very concerned that this will create more tension and hostility," Chaudry said.

This article is a perfect example of what Ann Coulter refers to in her book "Slander", and a perfect reason why the Gannett Gang is a group of subversive, anti-American, pro-Democratic, left-wing socialists.
The Gannett Gang runs the Daily Record, the Asbury Park Press, and the newsrag "People" among a host of other newspapers.
And who exactly ARE the Gannett Gang?? Like most left-wing publications, the treasonous authors of this garbage constantly bombarding the public, hide behind a mask of anonymity.
Morris County's shame is the Daily Record.
New Jersey's shame is the Star-Ledger, a similar left-wing organ distributed statewide.
Between these "news" organs and the New York Times, the New Jersey news reader of unsophisticated political orientation is subjected to daily propaganda abuse masquerading as news.
This partiually explains the reason New Jersey constantly and consistently sends into office the likes of Jon Corzine and Frank Lautenberg.
