It was Sherman according to my 1939 copy of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. Many interesting quotations that were widely known in my youth ('50's-60's) can be found there but not in the new editions, including the famous quote The only good Indians I ever saw were dead -- how many people know that was Gen. Philip Sheridan in 1869.

I believe you. I just had it wrong. It sounds like Fields and I thought it was him. Thanks for the info.
