Pundits have become absorbed of late by the prospects of war, and the political consequences of any action that might happen in Iraq. Who will lead, who will have the oil, who will hate us in the aftermath. All are good questions, of course, and worthy of some time. But this weekend is different and special. This weekend, by all accounts, may be the last weekend that our troops will spend in peace for a while, and this weekend ought to be about recognizing them, and thanking them, for their service.
While the usual accumulation of exhibitionist fringe elements strut themselves wantonly about the streets of America supporting our enemies, our troops stand steadfastly in harms way. On one hand, there is a rabble of self-indulgent, self-serving media seekers doing their level best to advance the notion that lunacy and wickedness can be contained by tepid inaction. On the other, there stands the flower of American and British youth, the pride of our civilizations, loyal, earnest, and prepared to do what is necessary to assure the end of a lunatic despot and his deadly regime. They know they face chemical weapons, yet they are still there. They know they face biological weapons, yet they are still there. They know they face the potential of nuclear weapons or radiological weapons. Yet, they are still there, still prepared, standing steadfastly in harms way.
