On May 8, the United States National Team will take on Mexico in a soccer match at the Reliant Stadium in Houston. I will admit I am not the biggest fan of the sport in the world, but I think it would be great idea for their to be a big pro-America crowd there for this game. Too often in matches held in areas fairly close to Mexico (Los Angeles in particular) our players have been treated as visitors by large pro Mexican crowds. The treatment of our players on our own soil by these crowds has been abysmal, and has included being hit with urine filled plastic bags. Since this game will be held in Texas, there is a likelihood of a pretty large Mexican crowd here. I would like to see that contingent dwarfed by an American crowd proud of their country, their troops, and of the team that will take the field that evening. What better locale to stage a massive pro-America rally than at a big international match that will likely be televised nationally and internationally?
So, if you are either indifferent or don't really like the sport that much, that's OK as long as our AMERICAN players have a pro-America crowd cheering them on in our house on our soil. I plan on going and hopefully a lot of other folks will too.
But then again, maybe this year it will be seen as actually patriotic to support the guys representing the USA.
We kicked Mexico's ass last year and knocked them out of the World Cup 2-0.
It'll be live on Univision and tape delayed on ESPN2, if that tells you anything.
Oakland Raiders "fans" come to mind after their antics post-Superbowl. Tampa had no such problems.
Same thing happens in Europe...some teams have never had problems while others are constantly in the press.
Several years ago we had some friends show up prior to a game stating: "Immagracion" and saw 2 carloads of opposing players leave quickly.
We won the game via forfeit.
