LAJES AIRBASE, Azores, March 16 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush said on Sunday that Monday was the last day for a vote on a second U.N. resolution that would pave the way for a war on Iraq.
Having said at a news conference that Monday was "a moment of truth for the world", Bush was asked by reporters if he meant the diplomatic window would close if by Monday the U.N. Security Council failed to pass a second resolution.
"That's what I'm saying," he said.
"Tomorrow is the day we will determine whether diplomacy can work," he told the news conference following a summit meeting with allies Britain and Spain. Bush, who has set as his goals the disarming of Iraq and a change of regime, said Iraqi President Saddam Hussein could avert a war by leaving Iraq.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair said at the news conference that Iraqi natural resources would be used following any war for the benefit of the Iraqi people. ((Writing by Howard Goller,

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said at the news conference that Iraqi natural resources would be used following any war for the benefit of the Iraqi people. I hope we make a special effort to demonstrate that we are not "stealing" the Iraqi oil. Then all the stupid peace activists will shut the heck up.

And since we are handling the costs of freeing them, I suggest they pay us in oil! Seems fair to me.

I think we've said that we'll reimburse some of the rebuilding costs through oil sales. It is only fair.
But as far as actually letting american companies exploiting the freed fields, I don't know if it's a good idea.
Every moron will say they were right, it was about oil all along.
I'd hate to have to defend such an action by Exxon et al.

Chiraq must be flabbergasted. They weren't expecting this in Paris at all.

Then all the stupid peace activists will shut the heck up. The odds of stupid peace activists shutting up about anything are pretty close to zero.

I really have to agree with you... If they set up a plan to use that oil for the Iraq's only a lot of do gooders will have to eat crow

I'm confused. I am of the understanding that the President said tommorrow is the deadline for action by the UN but in a later posting to this site on Hans Blix it says he has to give the UN 24 hrs. notice before a vote and he didn't do this. Did he or didn't he?

Neato Torpedo! Bush gives the UN a deadline before he gives Iraq a deadline.

My brother just came back from a visit to Europe. The weenies on the street are
furious with GW. They can't figure him out. They perceive him as "hostile" to them -he won't suck up to them like Bubba IOW- and they truly hate him.
He is giving them a deadline. They must really despise to have their nuts squeezed like this!
Too funny to watch them squirm.

I agree with your wish, but sadly even the attainment of peace would not make them shut up.
