"America's Long Middle Eastern Romance" I could be wrong, but I don't recall President Jefferson having any significant dealings with the Middle East. Could someone please tell the provencial clods at the New York Times that Lybia, Algeria, and Morocco are not part of the Middle East? The last time I checked, Rabat was still west of London.

You make a good point, and they (and I) should have been clearer about it. The Tripoli they speak about (and the Marines sing about) is in present-day Libya, correct? If it is, that is the middle east.
