(Another) WW II Vet Returns French Medal
Yahoo News ^ | March 14 2003

France isn't backing down with its threat to veto any resolution calling for war with Iraq and that has one local war veteran so furious that he's returning a medal of honor he received from the French government for his service during World War II.

Calling it a 'Medal of dishonor' Ed Parks said France should be helping U.S. President George Bush in the crisis with Iraq, instead of opposing him.

The Middleboro, Mass., veteran fought in the Battle of Normandy, helping to liberate France from the Germans. He said the French have forgotten what the United States did for them, so he's returning his French medal of bravery and his award plaque to the French embassy.

France has opposed any military action in Iraq, saying weapons inspectors are making progress.

The debt of gratitude that we owe our WWII vets increases with these actions like Mr Parks:

Calling it a 'Medal of dishonor' Ed Parks said France should be helping U.S. President George Bush in the crisis with Iraq, instead of opposing him.

The Middleboro, Mass., veteran fought in the Battle of Normandy, helping to liberate France from the Germans. He said the French have forgotten what the United States did for them, so he's returning his French medal of bravery and his award plaque to the French embassy.

I deeply appreciate these veterans and their great patriotism. Unfortunately, the French will not care at all. They will arrogantly send the medals to the scrap heap.

I care less what the French do.

These brave WWII gentlemen when they make these actions in their twilight are acting again for America.

If this had more coverage, especially from our own press - fat chance - the French people (at least the ones alive who still remember the war) would have to listen.

It’s too bad that he can’t return his French medals the way Doolittle returned his Japanese medal.

(Repost by VOA):
"If you meet a Frenchman, kick him in the @$$ for me!"

What a friend in graduate school said his father had told him.
(His father was a WWII infantryman who walked his way on "The Grand Tour" from
Normandy to Germany, along with a few other dogfaces...)

At the time I thought this was sort of an extreme statement...
after the past couple of months, I think it may have been an exercise in understatement.

Maybe he couldn't do this to France itself, but if he gave it to the USAF, I'm sure the medal would find it's way to some French built and/or financed equipment, weaponry or infrastructure in Iraq.

France and Germany have elected the way of pain.

They will rationalize it, based on previous profits made from dealing with Saddam.

(Sorry I can't give a citation)...I heard that German firms that assisted Saddam
with some of the work on that nuclear reactor plant the Israeli (Heavens Be Praised)
blowed up...the Germans made something like FOUR TIMES the going rate that
they'd gotten for doing a legit project elsewhere.

I'm not praising or damning the French/Germans on this issue...
but IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.

Just like the USSR, the socialists of Old Europe have to find any way they can to
drain excess money from any source, even if it means doing deals with a devil
or standing in the way of liberating forces.
