U.S.-Backed Resolution Appears Doomed

UNITED NATIONS, March 13 -- A U.S.-backed U.N. Security Council resolution authorizing war against Iraq appears doomed to fail, senior U.S. officials and foreign diplomats said today, though the Bush administration agreed to a British request to continue negotiations until Monday before calling for a vote or withdrawing the measure.

U.S. officials in recent days have claimed, without providing evidence, that they were within striking distance of reaching the necessary nine votes on the deeply divided Security Council. But officials were noticeably gloomy today after a British compromise offered Wednesday was largely rejected by the six countries that are officially undecided.

In addition to an almost certain French veto, and the possibility of a Russian veto, officials said they were convinced they would not even achieve what they call the "moral victory" of nine votes among the council's 15 member nations.

"It looks pretty grim," one senior administration official said. Another senior U.S. official said: "There is no reason to believe positions will change today or tomorrow."

Please. The Iraqi Army couldn't hit the broad side of a barn and is looking for ways to bail out of this conflict. While the Republican Guard is another matter, this diplomatic blunder doesn't take away from the ability of our troops to throttle any opposition they might find in their way.

Do I blame Bush for the delay? Of course, but I also understand that it won't make a difference in the course of the battle. Finally, Bush owed Blair one last try. I strongly suspect the Bush understood from the beginning that Tony's efforts would fail, but he had to proceed for Tony's sake.

Chris

I just saw a poll on Fox and Friends. 71 Percent want this taken care of - NOW! Up from 56 percent in February. Let's get going.

"Bush owed Blair one last try."

Any idea when this "one last try" will be? Now there's talk of a summit.

"Summit" my eye. The Aznar-Blair-Bush summit will be a council of war. That's all that is left. Aznar is being brought in because he is an American ally of longstanding and has been a voice of support in Europe for some time.

Whatever this "summit" or "council" comes up with will be proposed to the UN and the bidding for votes will resume.

This "one last try" for Blair is still a future event.

The blood is on Powell's hands, who hasn't delivered a single promise to the President.

Bush had the momentum when he said that the U.N. would be irrelevant if it did not enforce its own resolutions.

However, it was a sucker's ploy to beg that body for permission.

There was no resolution for Clinton to act against Serbia.

YET NO ONE TALKS OF THIS - THE TONE DEAF PUBLIC RELATIONS TEAM OF BUSH ARE USELESS!

Perhaps we should take up a collection to buy Bush a pair of pink panties with "former poker player" embroidered on them.

After thinking more on the situation

IMHO

Actually going to the UN probably didn't change anything

It was going to take months to build up the men - and supplies and France- Germany and whoever would have been raising hell on the diplomatic level anyway and then the Turkley problem would still have occurred

The UN is just the world stage for all the BS

Britain's anti Blair politicians would have clamored to get the UN involved etc etc etc

So we are where we are and I think would have been there anyway

All this UN BS got everybody's cards on the table

The wrangling has also markedly increased the American people's distaste for the UN, which will make it easier to announce a 'temporary' suspension of our membership in it.

No, I do not agree with this, friend.

Perhaps we should take up a collection to give President Bush our trust and gratitude for taking this "political hit" for his conviction that the security of the United States matters most of all?

This has become, after all, the UN vs. the US. ~~And, I'm still mighty glad George W. Bush is the captain of our team.
