What happened is POLICE said MK said she saw a gun. For whatever reason, police gave out incorrect information about what she saw. It might have been deliberate misinformation, to weed out false confessions and help them establish guilt if the real abductor were captured and interviewed.
MK said knife all along, we know now. Police put out the other story.
