But I dont think that explains why Elizabeth stayed for so long with ample opportunity for escape. It bothers me that she could have easily escaped many times, she was out in plain sight even questioned by police. I hope I'm raising my own kids to be smart and undocile enough that they would escape --even with less opportunity. There were times she could have yelled out or ran off and would have been saved but apparently didn't choose to do that and stayed with her captors.

How many women stay in abusive relationships? Husbands beat them and abuse them and often times even their children. Yet, the wife often times won't press charges and remains in the marriage. How many children are molested by strangers, family and friends and never tell a soul? What happens to someone's mind when they are raped, kidnapped and isolated for months?
Elizabeth was an innocent. I am sure she felt guilty after a while for having "given in" to their demands. She did what she thought she had to do to survive.
