Don't know any more, but back when I was in law school, Utah gave condemned prisoners their choice of hanging or the firing squad. There was a famous case (the name of which I don't recall :)) in which the condemned man chose hanging because he learned it would cost the state far more than simply shooting him.

There was a famous case...Gary Gilmore? He made the state's case more difficult by refusing to appeal his death sentence. He WANTED to die. He chose firing squad...and the state eventually fulfilled his wish.
