Do you remember the case of the NY psychiatrist (I think, or possibly a lawyer) and his live-in who adopted a little girl whom the sadistic man then abused and eventually beat to death? The live-in girlfriend (Hedda Nussbaum was her name, I believe) allowed the poor child to lie unconscious on the floor for a period of 4-6 hours after the man had left the apartment, and she never called 911. If that call had been placed, the child might well have recovered because brain swelling occurred during that time which killed her. Nussbaum got off on an insanity defense because she, too, had been abused by the man.

If it is somehow "understandable" that a grown woman would allow a helpless child to die, once the abuser had left the area, because she, herself, was abused and afraid, then surely we can give an impressionable, quiet, 14 year-old girl a break in this regard. The kid was scared and possibly brainwashed. I have heard it reported that she has said also that she was simply never left alone between her two captors (which remains to be seen). I am sure the two of them told her a lot of scary lies about lots of things. There are plenty of spunky kids out there in the world who might have grabbed a chance to escape, but not all kids are spunky kids.

John Gibson was on Shepherd Smith's program on Fox News just awhile ago. He mentioned that he as a reporter had personally covered three other cases like this.

He recalled a couple of them where the victim "could" have gotten to a telephone and called for help, but inexplicably didn't. He said that the abductor is naturally skilled in "cowing" the victim, making him feel helpless and paralyzed with fear so that even if the occasion presents itself they "chicken out" and don't avail themselves of it.

Those who assume that there is "something fishy" about this because Elizabeth could have gotten away are just ignorant. They know nothing of the psychology of situations like this.
