Breaking News: U.S. Rejects April 17th Deadline Extension, Says Vote Will Happen This Week
Sky News (breaking) ^ | 15:20 UK, Tuesday March 11, 2003

The White House says a UN Security Council vote on Iraq will take place this week and rejected a proposal to extend the deadline for Baghdad to disarm by one month.

The United States and Britain so far have failed to muster the nine votes needed for passage of a resolution setting the stage for war with Iraq.

But White House spokesman Ari Fleischer declared: "The vote will take place this week."

Fleischer also said a plan to extend the deadline for Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to get rid of his alleged weapons of mass destruction to April 17 was "a non-starter."

I'll believe it when I see it. It has been postponed and cancelled to many times for me to take this seriously yet.

Phew, thank God. I was really really growing tired of this delay, delay, delay thing. Each month that goes by, this gets harder, no doubt.

It would appear that the U.S. is serious about obtaining a vote this week and getting this diplomacy charade behind them.

Just to make sure you all know, Ari was talking about a rejection towards a floated April 17th deadline and has not ruled out extending the March 17th deadline.

I think the US should frame this resolution as giving IRAQ - not the nine securos a chance to vote. If they vote to comply with 1441 by March 17 there will be peace. Remember they did agree to 1441 unconditionally? If they vote NO, then it nullifies their november ploy.

Exactly. I wouldn't be surprised to see an extension of the deadline to March 31, when the moon is good, but not beyond April 1.

Bush should call up Powell with simple instructions. Make this vote happen in the next 10 minutes from the SC or we go in anyway.

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED.
