United States President George W. Bush has refused to accept a message from Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein promising to cooperate with the United Nations provided he was left in power, an Arab newspaper has reported.

The pan-Arab 'Asharq Al-Awsat' said the letter was have been passed on by Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al Thani at a brief meeting with Bush on Friday.

'President Bush refused to accept the message,' the paper said, citing an unidentified Arab official.

Saddam propsed to 'Cooperate fully with the United States on all their questions, in return for an agreement on no regieme change.'

Asharq Al-Awsat, also citing an 'informed' United States source, said Saddam had already twice sent messages to the United States administration via Arab governments offering 'oil and security concessions for the United States as soon as they halt their military offensive.'

This was probably is response to the Russian diplomatic plan reportedly that would have Saddam in exile outside of Baghdad, but still out of power and inside Iraq.

I disagree with our President here.
He should have sent a reply.

This is either a ploy (in which case it will get picked
up and trumpeted by the UIP [Useful Idiot Press]), or...

Saddam is getting genuinely worried. If the latter,
there's an excellent chance this will end with his
exile, and no shots being fired.

Saddam is clearly pissing his pants now. Bush aint Clinton and I think Saddam is finally seeing the end of his illustrious career as leader of the Ministry of Human Brutality and Iron Fisted Rule.

So, I guess this means it's not "all about oil."

That would be so kewl, but Saddam is a Clintonian narcissist. He thinks he's a God.
Let's hope you're right. It would be totally unbelievable!

As I've posted in another thread...

Keep in mind (and I'm sure GWB does) that the objective
here is to eliminate:
a. the threat that Iraq poses to the region
b. Iraq as a WMD supplier to terrorists
c. Iraq as a major customer of the PRK

It will be ideal if this can be done without war,
even if Saddam and a few top henchpersons survive.
No doubt there are many in Iraq that would prefer
a Mussolini-style outcome, but killing Saddam is not
worth even one Coalition casualty.

Obtaining a capitulation however, requires a credible
threat of overwhelming military force. And such a threat
is indistinguishable from actual preparations for war
and a clear will to wage it if necessary.

If we get a capitulation outcome next week, we could have
gotten it months ago. Thanks to bird-brain "doves", and
international weasels, it has cost extra millions of dollars
and probably extra thousands of lives of those innocent
Iraqis that the peace-at-any-pricers claim to be so
"concerned" about.

If we get a capit outcome, be sure to remind them at
every opportunity. And if we don't get it, and have to go
to war instead, remind them that we could have had it,
had they not provided aid and comfort to Saddam.

Yepper. Lefties should not get involved in politics. They should stick to tie dying t-shirts.
