Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honours AC/DC

November 12 2002

Australia's heavy-metal rockers AC/DC have been inducted into the 2003 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with Elvis Costello and the Attractions, The Police and The Clash.

They were joined by The Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, whose 1965 chart-topping hit You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling helped define what came to be called "blue-eyed soul" during that decade.

"These inductees represent many influential genres of rock, including 60s soul, heavy metal and 1970s English punk," said executive director Suzan Evans in a statement.

The hall inducts musicians whose careers began at least 25 years ago, a timeframe that has now reached the punk and hew wave of the Police, the Clash and Costello.

The Police and the Clash both disbanded in the mid-1980s.

The hard-charging guitars of Angus and Malcom Young combined with the growl of AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson to power the band's aggressive sound with anthems such as You Shook Me All Night Long in 1980.

The Hall of Fame is recognising both AC/DC's first singer Bon Scott, who died in 1980, and his replacement Brian Johnson.

The induction ceremony will be held in New York on March 10 and as in recent years, it will likely reunite bands that parted ways several years ago, sometimes acrimoniously.

Sting, the solo artist who was bassist and lead singer for The Police, told his website Sting.com: "I am very proud of the legacy of The Police. We were a damn good band and it still holds up."

AC/DC and the rest of the class of 2003 will be inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame today, March 10, 2003.

I always enjoyed the music of AC/DC but never in my wildest dreams did i believe they were hall of fame material. I must say AC/DC provided the best topless bar music i ever heard. yeah..baby..

She got the jack..Shes a whole lotta Rosie Odonnut! Highway to hell..etc..

I never had any doubts about the Police making it into the hall of fame..

I think that the following bands/artists definately belong in the rock and roll hall of fame:

Electric Light Orchestra
Chicago
Queen
Lynryd Skynyrd
Aerosmith
Steppenwolf
Bob Seger
Jethro Tull
Yes
Moody Blues
Cat Stevens
Doobie Brothers
Grand Funk Railroad
The Guess Who
Hermans Hermits
Molly Hatchet
Abba
Kansas
Hall and Oates
Emerson Lake and Palmer

Geez..I guess they would have to build another museum..lol..

I have always loved AD/DC and it was great to see my 10 year old son start to like them because their music was featured on a playstation game. He has been hooked ever since and went through all my old cassettes and cd's looking for their music and similar.

The concept of a "Hall of Fame" is anathema to the spirit of Rock and Roll. My hats off to the first band that says "No thanks".

Even though I'm originally from Cleveland, I have to agree.

I couldn't believe how good the AC/DC album Back in Black was, especially considering it was an album that featured their new lead singer. They picked up right up where they left off without missing a beat..so to speak. :)

True story. The last band I was with opened for Molly Hatchet. This was about the year 2000. We were completely pumped that we were going to be opening for them. It was an outdoor show, everything you could hope for. Then right before we went on, we learned that Molly Hatchet in its current incarnation does not have a single original member. The original band sold everything...the name, the songs, everything. So the band that is currently Molly Hatchet basically just bought it. It was really kind of a let down.

I moved to Florida just as Molly Hatchet burst on the scene. I'll never forget their signature guitar licks/solos and the powerful singing of Danny Joe Brown.

Maybe Hatchet will 'beat the odds' and make it into the hall of fame. :) They've been 'flirtin with disaster' down in 'Gator country' for a very long time.

I've been to Alabama, people ain't a whole lot to see; Skynyrd says it's a real sweet home but it ain't nothing to me. Charlie Daniels will tell you the good Lord lives in Tenessee, ha! But I'm going back to gator country where the wine and the women are free

seriously... the only other band I can think of that survived the death of its lead singer was Joy Division. Granted, the surviving members of Joy Division renamed themselves New Order after adding a keyboardist, but they were basically the same group of people. Pretty incredible.

I don't but understand some do keep this type of music away from their children and no longer watch the news with their children due to content.

In addition I am pleased he has no interest in rap and eminem....: )

Danny Joe Brown's voice sounds like the martian in bugs bunny cartoons in Flirtin' w/ Disaster.

I do like the band, though -- Classic Florida boys!

I didn't realize the band was all different members. I saw them in Osceola county a few years back (at the rodeo). I guess I saw McCormack.

lol..I certainly would agree Danny Joe Brown doesn't sing like
Paul McCartney, Peter Cetera, Roger Daltrey, Jeff Lynne, Robert
Plant, Bon Scott, Ross Valery, Syd Barret, Sting, Ronnie Van Zant or Jon Anderson..I might say that Danny Joe Brown sounded eerily similar to early Ian Anderson ..circa Stand UP album from 1969.. Anderson had a completely different singing style though, and the sound of his voice definatley changed within the next year or two..
