War toys, Easter an uneasy mix (Walgreens decides against baskets with toy soldiers)

Walgreens is retreating from plans to sell packaged Easter baskets in which toy soldiers and other war toys were featured nestled among the Easter candies.

Walgreens says intensifying talk of war in Iraq led it to rethink the combat sets that include troops in battle dress, assault rifles, planes, tanks and other toys, along with traditional candies.

I have never bought an Easter basket. If I did I would likely be a traditionalist/old fashioned and I had not idea they had toys in them now.

Boycotting Walgreens isn't an issue with me because the ones around here are awful and one was just shut down by the health dept. But using simple logic and nothing else, whether I like it or not, if one toy goes in there, all toys can.

I just want chocolate.

Well, that settles it. Think I'll mosey on down to the Walgreens on U and 128th, ask for an Easter basket with toy soldiers in it, and when told they don't have them, complain loudly about 'em being a bunch of lily-livered US Army bashing commies and how I'm gonna go to Wal-Mart to get one. Ought to go over big here in Western Dis(mal) Moines.

They had a list as long as your arm. They had rats and bugs, aisles were blocked with unopened shipements, fire doors and exits were blocked. And the weird thing is, I had made an emergency water bottle stop at the other local one, different town, and noted the same awful clutter. It looked like they'd emptied their warehouse into the store.

The ones around here are great with convenient pharmacies and plenty of fun impulse items and "As seen on TV" crap. Oscos had better liquor prices, though.

Nothing wrong with plastic GI toys. Nothing at all. Our kids had them too. But to me, it doesn't have anything to do with the Easter Bunny does it?

What do either GI toys or Easter Bunnies have to do with Easter the religious holiday? I think the war toys probably are inappropriate for Easter. There are other times and places where war toys would be appropriate.

Both :) My daughter will be 2 this month (which means I need to updated the profile page...keep forgetting). Plus I was taking a break form study and went to google news and started typing in various words...(won't mention some of the more adult words I tried, sheesh you can find anything in the news!)

You can be sure the LAST thing they are really concerned about is the tastefulness of toy guns and soldiers in an Easter basket. While theoretically I might agree that there are more appropriate items to put in an Easter basket, you have to look at the big picture--this is just another example of the left demonizing guns and the people who protect our country--it has absolutely NO meaning beyond that. The LAST thing they are concerned with is the sancticy of Easter. If NAMBLA were to distribute easter baskets filled with miniature sex toys and condoms (ugh, I can't believe I even thought of that), you can bet the same professional agitators so concerned about toy soldiers would gush endlessly about how wonderfully inclusive and appropriate NAMBLA's offering is...
