SAN FRANCISCO – It's fun to see a political battle raging by the left against their own. We love to see them tear themselves apart. For the few San Francisco conservatives, it's like having a brewsky and being able to watch female mud wrestlers. A real joy in life. And as you know, in this town, it's only a handful of men who could enjoy those female mud wrestlers.

Now we have a case that pits the ayatollah of the city, Mayor Willie Brown Jr., against his neutered, "affirmative action" police chief, Earl Sanders, who is battling it out with the known cop hater and socialist D.A. Terrence Hallinan.

What a match! Sit back and grab the popcorn. The show is about to begin.

District Attorney Hallinan has been arrested more often than most of the defendants he prosecutes. So it's not surprising that he now has his office bringing charges against the police chief and the entire command staff.

He hates them. He has now aimed the full power of his office against the police. And why not? He ran for district attorney on an anti-police and anti-jail platform.

Besides, his office has the time because they don't like putting away conventional criminals. Hallinan felt that jails were a waste of money and that all criminals needed was just some love and understanding. He felt that cops were the problem.

He ran for office on a pro-criminal, anti-jail platform. He ran against a professional, lock-'em-up prosecutor. San Francisco chose the wacky D.A. The city knew full well it elected a cop hater.

We always knew the left would eat their young, and they are doing so with gusto in this wacky holdout of rejects called San Francisco. The chickens have come home to root.

Left vs. Left in Cop Wars

The problem is not just the district attorney, who is not playing with a full deck. But the police culture that over the years has been so feminized, defanged and neutered that there is no collective memory of any major arrest in homicide, fraud or any other high-toned crimes.

The D.A.'s biggest arrest that he prosecuted was a landlord who had a faulty deck. Hallinan lost the case.

In fact, the police here are well known for responding to crimes hours after the call for help was made. It seems that the mayor has appointed so many ACLU types on the police commission, who are similarly anti-cop, that cops don't want to risk their careers or get demoted for actually being rough with gang-bangers or other suspects. Heaven forbid. That's not politically correct.

Moreover, arresting suspects is dangerous work. No, not from the arrest themselves, but from lawsuits that follow. Cops can and do get sued personally, putting their own life savings at risk, to defend themselves from gang-banger lawsuits stemming from arrests. And in this town, there is no sympathy for police on juries. It seems that the insane are running the asylum.

So police are now left to be mere clerical order takers. They're real good at writing police reports hours after the criminals...

D.A. Hallinan and Mayor Willie Brown were once kissing cousins. Hallinan couldn't even get his law license, because of all his arrests, until Brown intervened by testifying on his "good moral character" before the state Bar.
