I'm a guy, and I have to agree with you totally, and am glad you said it. He wasn't pretty-boy handsome, but a solid, masculine, comfortable with himself, good-looking warm-smiling guy.

I'll say another. I think he was 'way UNDER-rated as an actor. As I watch (and re-watch) The Quiet Man, and a lot of his others (Red River, etc.), the old canard about him just playing himself... nuh uh. Maybe he had a limited range, but within that range, he embodied those characters and brought them to life very convincingly and involvingly. You can see the wheels moving in his head, his eyes say a lot... the man could act.
