Attack and occupy Saudi instead?
To: genefromjersey
In all seriesness, I believe that our troops are closer. If we actually get a hint of this happening, we attack immediately (we could attack any time now with a plausible explanation) and the Russians either turn back (they won't be close yet) or risk starting a HOT WWIII themselves.
I don't think that will happen. If it does, take very seriously the Bible prophesy about "those who dwell safely in the coastlands" and get yourself to Arizona quick!

Considering the success they had in Afghanistan, I'd be sitting back laughing my arse off!!
I've got a feeling the Russian soldiers would complain of air sickness and forget to board the planes.

Russia doesn't have 100 fighters that work.
Go back to sleep.

Just what the Russians need --- more Muslim troublemakers.
Russian troops might "protect" the oil fields, but I doubt we'll see them in Baghdad.

I don't think you have to worry about this my friend. Get some sleep.

My friend, we don't need 40k troops. We need three nuclear subs and a couple of bombers.
To: ItisaReligionofPeace
My husband's fast attack sub will probably not be one of them, much to his chagrin *L* He SOO wants to go over there and help launch a Tomahawk up someone's ass (he's a sonar tech) Damn shame we don't have one of those SSGNs to send over there yet. 154 Tomahawks would be a pretty sight...

That should be done in any case, as the Wahabis are the locus of jihadism.

**Iraq then broadcasts a stunning announcement : They have invited Russian troops to enter Iraq, and protect them from invasion.**
This won't happen.

This is a very interesting scenario, although I don't think it would happen. Russia likes selling oil to the west, and is acting to some degree as a counterbalance to OPEC. If they jumped in with Iraq at this point they would bollocks up their whole deal with the west. So, I won't say that it won't happen, but it seems highly unlikely to me.

What's a SSGN? The 154 number is public, right?
To: snooker
Wish THAT were true ! The Chinese bought their latest high-tech fighters from Russia, and, from what I've heard, they are nothing to sneeze at !

We also know, once established in Iraq, the Russians will strike north into Iran, to seize that country as well.Hmm...sounds like a plan to me. Will we get to help?

SSGN is where they're taking 4 of our Ohio class missile boats and converting them to shoot Tomahawks. An Ohio class has 24 missile tubes for their Trident missiles, one per tube. These new SSGN boats will use 22 of the 24 missile tubes and be able to carry 7 Tomahawks per tube. They've already had successful test firing of the Tomahawks from one of the boats they're working on, the USS Florida. It's gonna be a few years (not sure exactly how many) before the first SSGN will be fully operational, though. And yes, it's been reported by the news media more than once so that's why I felt that I could mention it here on FR.
