LINARES, Spain -- On one side, the kid, dressed in black but baby-faced and fidgety. On the other, his opponent: the icy, scowling chess eminence Garry Kasparov.
Against all odds, Teimour Radjabov, 15, beat Kasparov, the world's top-ranked player, although the teen did benefit from a Kasparov blunder as the champ looked poised to win.
That duel of David and Goliath -- culminating in Kasparov's failure to shake Radjabov's hand afterward -- was a highlight of the Linares Chess Tournament, sometimes called the Wimbledon of chess.

That duel of David and Goliath -- culminating in Kasparov's failure to shake Radjabov's hand afterward That sounds pretty rude. Anyway, does the chess champ get all the chicks?

culminating in Kasparov's failure to shake Radjabov's hand afterward I wonder if Kasparov is related to Al Gore.

"(Judit's) attacks are the ultimate in terms of viciousness ... surviving her attack is almost impossible. Her aggressive style is so intimidating that the most important thing is to remain calm ... the worst part is that she exploits every tiny mistake you make." Reminds me of my wife -- except she doesn't play chess.

Yugoslavia - Bosnia I think. The Polgar sisters arranged for the Fischer-Spassky rematch a decade back. Fischer ignored a US travel ban to play there. He has become a anti-US ranting nutcase.
But Judith became the youngest person to become a GM. Not sure if that record has been beat yet.

Sergey Karjakin, from the Ukraine, became at Grandmaster at twelve, last year. No less than five others had broken Judit's record of becoming a Grandmaster at 15. Incidentally, Judit broke the record held by Bobby Fischer, who turned 60 yesterday.

Thx for the info, Freidrich. Suspected it had been broken - but 12!!! I am amazed by all GM's - who I think are the next step in evolution - but to have done that at twelve - amazing.
