You are exactly right. I have found HALO and MechAssault for Xbox on the most difficult levels teach significant amounts of tactics. As a former Marine grunt and Gulf War Combat vet, I believe that a few of these games exceed chess in the honing effect on fire and maneuver skills that are a part of the whole combat infantryman.
Don't get me wrong, if you resemble a "Far Side" cartoon character and are an expert gamer, you are no soldier. If however you are a member of our Army Airborne or a US Marine, or are being prepared by parents to become one, I believe that there is much to learn from these "simulators".
Getting to blow away aliens with a shotgun on the 35" TV with the subwoofer cranked up just so happens to be a hell of a good alternative to watching TV on Saturday night !!
heheheeeee!!
Don't have a sub system, but my Infinity SM 155s (mains) do a bang up job!
They are a virtual (excuse the pun) replica of the battlefield and the soldier will learn many hard lessons in humility and the difference between cover and concealment.
I play on a server that caters to mostly ex-military or cops and we have a ball.
I have often thought that in this age of Miniaturization and Biology, we may in fact be seeing the future of the battlefield.
where the 14 year old killers of today become the Colonels of the future.
