SAN FRANCISCO - John Walker Lindh, the American imprisoned for taking up arms for the Taliban in Afghanistan (news - web sites), was attacked by a fellow inmate and slightly bruised, his lawyer said Thursday.
Law enforcement authorities confirmed the 21-year-old Lindh was attacked but would not disclose a possible motive.
The incident happened Monday night at the medium-security federal prison in Victorville as Lindh was preparing to pray, said his lawyer Tony West.
"Our understanding is that the inmate tackled John and began hitting him while screaming obscenities before running off," West said in a statement. Lindh suffered a bruise on his forehead, the lawyer said.
"John is fine," West said. "He's in very good spirits."
A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "It was a minor incident, a prison fight. He got a little scraped up, but he's fine. One guy was picking on him."
The official had no information on Lindh's attacker.
The FBI (news - web sites) said Thursday it was investigating.
The investigation started after the San Bernardino County Sun received an anonymous tip early Tuesday.
"Yes, I'd like to inform your newspaper that John Lindh Walker, who is incarcerated in Victorville, was assaulted this night by a white supremacist organization that is imprisoned there. Thank you," the male caller said in a voice message.
Lindh was sentenced in October to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to supplying services to Afghanistan's Taliban government and carrying explosives in commission of a felony.
He has been at the prison northeast of Los Angeles since January. Before arriving there, Lindh had been held at a federal lockup in Virginia. He was moved to be closer to his parents, who live in Northern California.
Lindh was placed in the general prison population last month at his attorneys' request and was working as an orderly, cleaning indoors where guards could watch him, the Sun reported, citing an unidentified prison source. The source said that since Monday, Lindh had been in special housing, similar to solitary confinement, for his protection.
Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman Dan Dunne said Lindh "is housed in a unit which is consistent with his individual safety and security needs."
The prison has more than 1,650 inmates.
If you think G. Gordon Liddy is an authority on ANYTHING, you are in serious need of psychiatric help. He, along with a whole gang of stupid pretend-macho men, came close to destroying the Republican Party in this country. He is probably a psychopath- but that would be judgemental, wouldn't it?
I guess some of us feel that this traitor, of his own free will, cancelled the contract between him and his government. In the process, he joined with a group of people who violently hate his government, and those of us who are the real government. The people he joined with were responsible for our fellow peaceful citizens having to experience the last moments of their lives in burning horror, having to make the decision whether to jump to their deaths or burn to death, having to make the decision to "roll". Perhaps some Americans slept thru 9/11, but not here. As far as sympathy for this traitor is concerned, I think he'll find it defined in the dictionary between s#it and syphilis.
That said, he chose to be in with the general prison population- and I don't doubt it is because he wants to see if he can convert people to his "faith." And since he chose to be there against the recommendation of the authorities, he has only himself to blame.
His citizenship should have been stripped and he should have to answer for his crimes in Kashmir.

Of course he did, but many Yankees felt the same way about Jeff Davis, with better reason. They didn't hang Davis, and only imprisoned him for two! years.
Of course, they had a better understanding of the Constitutional contract, being less than 100 years removed from the original thought.

You’re absolutely right … When he took up arms, he forfeited his citizenship. (Anyone wh doubts this can read page 4 of their passport.) Without citizenship, he’s lucky to have been afforded a trial.

Let's see, Jeff Davis had the guts to stand up and become one of the most visible of the Confederates, he most assuredly recognized that by doing that he might be put to death by a victorious north. The traitor bin-walker cowered in the shadows and did nothing to stop Johnny Mike Spann (another American contractor) from being murdered by bin-walker's terrorist filth buddies, bin-walker didn't seem to plan to be put to death by his former contractors. Both sides in the civil war, thru various statements and actions, indicated a desire at raprochment with one another during the war. No matter how imperfect those attempts may have been, they existed. The traitor bin-walker slithered into the shadows of his terrorist filth buddies, and would never have attempted any type of reconcilliation with his former contractors if he had not been exposed. I don't wish to refight the civil war on this thread. You can justify treating this traitorous garbage in some humane way as is your right. I don't choose to, I remember watching the towers implode and seeing pictures of those people jumping to their inhumane deaths; they had no choice in the matter. As I said previously, Lindh is small fry. You should save your venom for the REAL traitors - "Americans" like the Democrat senators, who are trying to replace the three branches of government with an unelected, unaccountable tyranny of black-robed a**-clowns-for-life. That is what should really scare you, not some minnow in a Kalifornistan prison.
