. Byrd will do the same. I only wish we could put him on the Shuttle. (one way)

Wouldn't that be nice.

I suggest you go back and read the discussions of Frist's strategy on the earlier live threads. Frist is following a 2-tier strategy so thet the democrats will be repeatedly forced to put their name on record as opposing an up and down vote, and at the same time the Republicans will control the business of the Senate, which is important in time of war. All the democrats are going to be able to do is talk and vote.

It would be good if they are able to get the Rats to fold today, but I imagine it will take 2 or 3 cloture votes.

Interesting that he's called his first press conference in months...on the same day as the first Estrada cloture vote.

The only problem I see with this is that once the democrats are on record as being for the Fillibuster, it will take a lot more effort to make them change their minds if they are willing to withstand the initial fury. The last democrat that votes for cloture is going to get a whole lot of his base really pissed off at him. But right now we have 10% of the democrats who are already supporting Estrada. Only the most partisan dems are opposing him and this is evident by the editorials the newspapers around the nation have written. 66 editorial boards support cloture and only 8 support the fillibuster. http://rpc.senate.gov/releases/2003/Editorialchart2.htm

Democrats think that they can get away with this because average voters don't pay much attention to stuff like this. Its our job to make them know that lots of people are paying close attention

Ogilve...I just love to hear him talk, don't you? Some voices just move the soul....probably why most of the Senators don't come in until after he prays! That was an excellant prayer too! Man! From his lips to God's ears...

Is this an address to the nation, or a press conference?

The bold thing to do was to force the Dems to stage a REAL filibuster. No weekends, or Presidents Day holidays. A real live Mr. Smith goes to Washington scene. Republicans didn't do it, because;
a. they don't have the courage to play hardball, and;
b. they wanted to have the weekend off as well.

I'll be happy to be wrong here, but history is on my side.

Once they vote for cloture, don't they again have to petition and wait two days to vote again?

No. The SMART thing to do was gradually ratchet up the Tension, by allowing Telemundo to get interested, and thereby increase the heat from the Hispanic commmunity, and continue to win over the Editorial Boards, so the by the TIME it actually gets VERY PUBLIC, the predisposition of the Electorate is against the Democrats.

Going for the Jugular right away only leaves the Dems on Equal footing in the court of public opinion.

So, from your post, and I have heard it before...I think this war is going to be called, "GWII"..."Gulf war 2" Or "George's War 2" or "George W's war too" ?

Just kidding now, nobody get yer dander up!
