It was a prudential judgement from what I can make of it and John Paul II is entitled to his own opinion on the matter. Though I have to say that while the media sure as hell held up the brave dissenting AmChurch folks during the sex abuse scandal as though they were some kind of saints because they dared to disagree with the evil, tyrannical Vatican(TM), they sure as hell seem to listen to what the pope has to say when it comes to his thoughts on a war with Iraq.
If only they felt the same every time he condemned the far greater tragedy of abortion.
My personal opinion is that the Holy Father believes that by adopting this stance he can safeguard the lives of thousands of Chaldean Christians who might otherwise be slaughtered if Saddam feels the need to prove his Islamist credentials, but that is my own opinion.
