I think its safe to say that Powell efforts in the UN and the approach we took to assuage France and Germany were a failure. I am not sure anyone could have pulled this off due to all the hate and envy coming from the old european leftists.

That's not true, and it's a dumb-ass way to go into this vote. It's pretty simple. You get 9 signatures on the resolution or you don't bother with a formal vote. If they won't sign it, they won't support it.
