If Bush were to call off the war at this point, he would alienate much of his conservative base. It could cost him the presidency. Would his opponents who are currently criticizing him on the war sing his praises if he backs off? Certainly not! They would just intensify the "dumb cowboy" refrain.

This would be the least of it, It isn't hard to see that demorats could have a windfall in the House and Senate as well. Conservatives would be screwed.
