New $220m. Eilat airport approved
By TAL MUSCAL

The Southern District Planning Committee has approved the building of Eilat s new airport, expected to cost $220 million, the Airports Authority said on Tuesday. The airport will be constructed 19 kilometers north of the town, near Timna.

Nestled in the heart of Eilat, the current airport will cease operations and be converted for commercial use, once the new facility is open. A target date for completion has yet to be given.

In light of the approval, and green light given by the Eilat Municipality, Eilot Local Council, the defense establishment, Environment Ministry, and green organizations, authority director-general Gabi Ophir has instructed the authority s planning division to begin working on preliminary plans.

According to current plans, the facility will encompass 5,500 dunams (1,375 acres), including a 3,600-meter runway allowing for international and domestic flights.

Once completed, the passenger terminal will be 50,000 square meters, some 15,000 sq.m. larger than Ben-Gurion Airport s Terminal 1, destined to become the domestic terminal once the Ben-Gurion Airport 2000 project is finalized, and Terminal 3 is operational. On the ground, there will be parking facilities for 30 passenger planes and 40 general aviation aircraft.

In a separate development, the authority published six tenders last week for restaurant operations at Terminal 3.

The new 270,000 sq.m. international terminal, will include 15 spots for restaurants and cafes in both the air terminal (for ticketed passengers) and land terminal, which is open to the general public.
