Lawyer Mark Patrick Flaherty easily defeated County Council President James Simms and four other candidates for Allegheny County controller yesterday as the Democratic Party organization voted on its choices for support in the looming primary campaign.

While the victory margin for Flaherty, the son of a former county commissioner and appellate court judge, was decisive, that contest produced the sharpest note of controversy in daylong balloting that determined the party's slate for countywide offices, judgeships and seats on Pittsburgh City Council and Allegheny County Council.

Another example of Dems ignoring their base.

When will African-Americans realize their real home is in the Republican party and come home?

Simms, who is African American, expressed sharp disappointment at the rebuff from his party, while predicting that it, coupled with a variety of other perceived slights to African-American Democrats, would have consequences felt up and down the ballot in this year's elections.

Some leading Republicans have discussed the possibility of slating Simms as the GOP nominee for controller.

If Americans of African descent expect to be elected to any office of consequence, they may do well to sign up with the Republican party. Otherwise, they are just cannon fodder for the Democrats to throw out there, stood up in front to be shot down by "friendly fire".
