Once they had a segment on Candid Camera where they ushered TV critics to their assigned rooms in a hotel during a TV Critic Convention, then Funt proceeded to tell them that the TV in their room was broken and wouldn't be replaced.

Of course, the TV critics hemmed and hawed, treated the staff rudely, etc.

Then Peter Funt said that a surprise guest had checked into the hotel, so they decided to play the same trick on him.

The unexpected guest was Fred Rogers. He was taken to his room and then given the same scenario that the others had been given about how the TV was broken, etc. etc.

In true "Mr. Rogers" character, he just looked at Funt and said, "That's okay, I don't have to watch TV."

It was a moment that let you know that Mr. Rogers was Mr. Rogers. A truly kind, compassionate, caring guy who was the same guy in person as he was on TV.

I saw that episode, and was looking to see if anyone would post about it. I'm glad you did. I remember that Mr. Funt kept trying to get Mr. Rogers to be irritated, but he just was as nice as ever and just kept saying that everything was just lovely and would be just fine. I remember at the time thinking that he was just the nicest person ever.

I'm sure God loves Mr. Rogers and they are now in each other's company.
