after reading through all the replies on this thread, I can't help but think that a lot of folks would have been better off taking advantage of the lessons given on Sesame Street. The spelling errors are horrendous

Spelling is an arbitrary and capricious construct; if you know what they are saying get over it.

I just watched on our PBS station, a Tribute to Mr Rogers. It was a documentary on how Fred started in children's programming and then when he had Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

At the end, it was so touching it just brought tears to my eyes. This was filmed I am guessing in the 1980's. There was a young boy of about 8 in a wheelchair on the program. He explained his disability. He was 7 months old and had a tumor. When they went to get the tumor out, nerves were severed that told his arms and legs what to do.

The little guy was beautiful, and you could see how much he revered Mr. Rogers. Fred started to sing " It's You I Like", and the young boy smiled, and began singing along with Fred. I got all choked up, because he was teaching love to the audience, but he was making that young boy feel they were all alone. It was so good.

Hope those interested will check your local PBS and catch it. I am sure it will run over and over.

I remember that, too! I loved those little videos showing how things are made (also hand painted carousel ponies and spoons).

I never watched as a child but I watched with my own kids in the late 80's and early 90's.

When I told my kids Mr. Rogers died today, my son (13) said, "He's in a better neighborhood now, Mom."

I learned English watching Mr. Rogers.

I was a little too old to watch him, but he spoke slowly, and clearly, and it helped me understand the words.

My life was made better by his.

So sad.

But most Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network shows are frenetic, violent, and jaded.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Was just thinking this exact thing as I sit here typing while my daughter is watching "Pete and Pete", on Nick. I just turned and asked her what was going on cuz I noticed some little girl was screaming on the TV. I have banned several shows from the above networks in my house.

Few people know, but Rogers was actually an ordained minister and he worked to provide positive messages on the tv as part of his ordination.

What a legacy. I remember Mr. Rogers Neighborhood being a very important part of my day. Along with the Electric Company and Zoom, it didn't get any better.

I still own (I made a cassette of it)the original Mr. Rogers Neighborhood album) and many of the songs entermy mind at the oddest moments. Any time I spell the word "friend" the melody of "F-R-I-E-N-D special, you are my friend, your special to me....." goes through my mind without fail.

I remember as a kid recording an episode on my old Panasonic cassette recorder and going to the piano trying to figure out what the piano player was doing at the opening of each of the shows (i didn't have a clue...). It was a very cool two fisted lick leading into the descending chord progression of "It's a Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood".

Little did I realize (until much later of course)that it was a supurb jazz player by the name of John Costa. Rogers was a fine player himself, and it's clear by listening to his wonderful songs, that he knew what he was doing.

A loss indeed.
