Even as Gov. James E. McGreevey publicly stood by Charles Kushner yesterday, people close to the governor were quietly urging the embattled developer to surrender his bid to become chairman of the Port Authority, three sources familiar with the talks said yesterday.

Not only has Kusher contributed big bucks to the DNC, and to the the Clintons, he is a pal and contributor to the Senate's leading villain - the disgraced ex-senator Torricelli who was forced to resign under a cloud, accused of massive corruption. Now the rumor is that the Torch wants to go into business with Kushner, wants to be - get this - a developer.
