IIRC, it was Haley's comet, in 1910, on that paticular pass, the earth went through the tail.

I have seen an old photo in an older astronomy book, and it shows the tail from the horizon to approximately 40 degrees up. People were definately perturbed.

Thanks! I thought it might have been Haley's, but never was sure. I personally thought my g-grandfather sounded crazy to work if the world was ending; but now that I am older I am not so sure.
