Iran angered by Argentine media reports implicating it in Jewish center explosion

TEHRAN, Iran

The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned Argentina's top diplomat on Tuesday to complain about Argentine media reports that implicated Iran in the blowing up of a Jewish center in 1994, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

The agency said the ministry condemned the reports as "baseless allegations."

The agency did not identify the Argentine charge d'affaires. The Argentine Embassy in Tehran did not return telephone calls on Tuesday.

La Nacion, a prominent Argentine daily, reported over the weekend that two Argentine prosecutors were seeking to question the former Iranian ambassador to Argentina and 21 other people, including high-ranking diplomats, who worked at the embassy at the time of the bombing. Eighty-five people were killed in the explosion at the Jewish center in Buenos Aires.

The newspaper said government officials were worried the request, now being considered by an Argentine judge, could anger the Iranian government.

Officials at the Argentine intelligence service have long implicated the Tehran government in the 1994 attack, along with the 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires. Iran has consistently denied the charges.

IRNA said that in Tuesday's meeting, the Argentine charge d'affaires deplored the anti-Iranian reports in his country' media and said they contradicted his government's position toward Iran.

"The Argentine government is willing to develop excellent relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran," IRNA quoted the diplomat as saying.

The attack on the Jewish center in the Argentine capital was the deadliest terrorist act in the country's history. It came two years after a blast destroyed the Israeli embassy, killing 28 people.

Me thinks Argentine is looking for another butt-kicking similiar to the one the Limeys gave them in 1982.

At least this time around, the two navies involved will be on par with one another. An Argentine-Iranian war could be a ten-round fist-fight won by decision.

The Islamoswine killed 100 Jews (some non-Jews too) when they bombed the community center in Buenos Aires.

Look, this would not be the first time Judicial processes have proven to be "inconvenient" from the point of view of the Executive Branch.

Look at the pressure to drop the 9-11 lawsuit against those Saudi institutions in our own country.

Governments often don't speak with one voice.

In Argentina's case, I'm sure that they would like better relations with a Tehran perceived to be more moderate than anything operating in the 1992-94 time frame. It is just that both governments have to live with the responsibility for the largest act of terror in Argentine history.

It can't be wished away.

The Iranians are responsible. You better believe it. They are the ones who masterminded the destruction of the Israeli embassy.

Most levels of the current Argentine government are filled with anti-Semitic vampires.

Do you have a clue what you're talking about ?

Hamas has been determined to be responsible for the blasts, aided by its sponsor Iran.

I don't think Argentina is looking for a butt kicking, it is looking for justice.

Argentina's president at the time was Menam, of Syrian ancestry, who "converted" to Catholicism in order to become president.

His son was reputed to be a liason with Hamas.

Argentina has been infested with anti-Semitism since post-WWII influx of German Nazis. They still have their own German schools and communities.

I believe Carlos Menam was born Christian of some kind and converted from that to Catholic. BTW> The Alewite Muslims control Syria. They are a strange sect with many Christian practices and are 10% of the total population

Thanks for the info. My Argentinian friend indicates he coverted, and I assumed he was non-Christian.

Looks like you're right... according to this. Menem was born Muslim:

A close friend is from Argentina and what I know, other than newspaper accounts, derives from her.

It is most disturbing that the Saudis have funded a mosque in Argentina, to be the largest in South America.

These articles are now somewhat out-of-date as the "triangle" area of Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina is now infested with Arabs, there to conspire against the West. An out-of-the-way place where terrorism can forment its dirty deeds.

Just in this hemisphere, we are now facing terrorist havens in Cuba and the Carribean, Venezuala, Columbia, and the Triangle. Not to mention Canada. We have too many fronts in this war. Time to prioritize.

This has been true as well for Paraguay, the Fatherland of Alfredo Stroessner.
