MOSCOW (AP) - Saddam Hussein promised a Russian envoy that international inspectors won't be hindered in their work, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Monday.

The statement said Saddam made the promise in a meeting Sunday in Baghdad with Yevgeny Primakov, a former Soviet foreign minister and Russian prime minister. Primakov has mediated in Iraq on several occasions, most prominently with attempts to stave off the 1991 Gulf War.

Saddam Hussein has promised a lot of things. It won't be long until the US does some PROMISING on its own.

Putin's office said that he had spoken by telephone with French President Jacques Chirac to ``confirm the closeness of the positions of Russia and France, based on the priority of political-diplomatic methods of resolving the Iraq problems.''

LOL.. closeness to France's position.. Since when did the Russians start retreating? Shame... Shame... Shame.

Also Monday, Putin's office said that he had spoken by telephone with French President Jacques Chirac to ``confirm the closeness of the positions of Russia and France, based on the priority of political-diplomatic methods (also known as methods designed to preserve the current financial stakes in Iraq of their respective countries) of resolving the Iraq problems.''

Saddam Hussein promised a Russian envoy that international inspectors won't be hindered in their work, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Monday.

This is more of the garbage spewed by the pro-Saddam crowd at the UN and in US liberal communist gatherings. The "work of the inspectors" is not to look for weapons, the real work of the inspectors is to verify as Iraq destroys the weapons they say they don't have. If you hear anyone talk about Iraq letting the inspectors do their job, ask them when Saddam has let them even see his stockpiles.

At this point, this whole line of argument is a waste of air. Bush has made it clear that he's not buying this idea that the inspectors are supposed to go over there and play "catch me if you can." The onus is on Saddam to show what happened to the tons of poison gas he was known to have when the inspectors left in 1998. This "wonderful breakthrough" does not address that at all; it's just more license to play Inspector Clouseau while the centrifuges down in the bunkers are running.

If this is going to be the great Russian contribution to the process, it was a waste of time.
