From Chapter 24, "The Checkpoint Conference"
The overall checkpoint process was compared to the routine vehicle and body searches now being given to airline passengers and their vehicles in and around airports. Since by and large the public had stopped griping and grown accustomed to these searches, there was no reason to believe that they would not do the same with random highway checkpoints, since after all it was for the greater safety and security of the entire population.

If people would cut back on flying, these rules would go away. Instead, they walk in and put down their dollars like good little lemmings.
