As mentioned in the original post, the awards weren't for "one song." Again, among the awards she won:
Pop Vocal Album (Award for non-instrumental album that had significant sales--making it popular.)
Engineered Album, Non-Classical (technical producing award)
Female Pop Vocal Performance (female singer award for technique, style, etc.)
Best New Artist (self-explanatory)
Record of the Year (Award to the Artist and to the Producer(s), Recording Engineer(s) and/or Mixer(s), if other than the artist.)
Song of the Year (A Songwriter(s) Award. A song is eligible if it was first released or if it first achieved prominence during the Eligibility Year. (Singles or Tracks only.)
Album of the Year
>>>8 awards, rather than have others get their due.
That sounds awfully liberal. Excellence should be awarded. Are you suggesting that other, less deserving artists should have been honored--just to be fair? Oh, my...
>>>This is one of the reasons I NEVER watch this trash.
No offense intended, but I hope you don't make all your decisions so adamantly, on such faulty premises. (In this instance, it's not 8 awards for 1 song...but rather, awards in 8 different categories, rewarding achievement and excellence using a wide range of criteria.
>>>Award shows sicken me - the Academy awards, and the grammys. What other industry do you have people who work in it giving each other awards for the work they do? It's not sufficient to receive millions of dollars for their efforts, they have to have a national audience where they give each other awards for this!
Generally, I agree with you. But almost every industry has award ceremonies...it's just that the Teaching Award Ceremony, Architectural Design Awards, JD Powers Automobile Awards and the International Plumbers Association Awards don't make very good television. There's no question that, by definition, all of these industry award ceremonies are narcissistic--and most of the shows are not worth watching. The Grammy Awards are a little different...
But back to the "others should've gotten their due" concept...That's reminiscent of the libs who don't want a Valedictorian in each graduating class, because it hurts other students feelings. It also reminds me of some school systems who want kids to play games where nobody loses, (i.e., there's no winner) in an effort to make the kids feel good because one kid keeps winning all the time. Again, I'm not busting nads here, but just as many people think they're liberal but actually hold conservative beliefs; there are many out there who are much more liberal than they'd like to believe.
Yes, I wish we showed a bit more distance and perspective when it comes to these self congratulatory affairs designed from the getgo (D'uh!) to sell more of those $18.98 CD's of mostly filler material. Instead, the "perspective" we get are sincere explanations of alleged differences between "record of the year", and "album of the year" as if these were natural, godgiven distinctions and not cynical, artistically and logically meaningless commercial categories!
I bought a couple of albums last year that would knock you off your feet, I guarantee, and that will never be recognized by this overfed self centered industry.
