[history]
Paris -- A day after Jacques Chirac ruffled feathers by advising several Eastern European countries to shut up about the Iraq crisis, a new poll found that more than three-quarters of the French considered their president courageous in bucking Washington's rush to war.

The French are extremely insular. I'm sure they enjoy tweaking Uncle Sam's nose. But when the start to see the consequences, Chirac's popularity will plummet.

The Nobel Peace Prize seems to have become the prize for the biggest whiner saying " we need peace" rather then someone who has actually accomplished something about it

The frogs are jealous of the U.S. Always have been.
The only times they've supressed it is when they needed Uncle Sammy to come and save their bacon.
Why are they jealous? Because of what America has contributed to the world. The list would fill many volumes.
Look at what France has contributed to the world. That list would fill maybe a post card. Or a postage stamp (with enough room left for the Lord's prayer).

"But when they start to see the consequences"I agree. It will take about a month for it to start "really" beginning to be felt.

How nice to be able to convince yourself that your long time ago prominent "culture" makes you superior to a country that had to save you twice. That whole country needs therapy.

Well...they ensured our independence with the French Alliance and we saved their butts twice in the twentieth century. Sounds like pretty fair exchange.
BTW, those who attack the Chirac and his backers as "surrender monkeys: forget that Chirac's party is Gaulist and thus was very much against the surrender to Germany and, in fact, took up arms against the Nazis even before the U.S....but then I wouldn't want to confuse freepers with the facts.

forget that Chirac's party is Gaulist and thus was very much against the surrender to Germany and, in fact, took up arms against the Nazis even before the U.S....And that was what? 50+ years ago? Apparently, the party has gone through a transition... Change is ineveitable...

50 years ago? On that theory, World War I and World II no longer matter and French aren't surrender monkeys. They certainly have refused to surrender to us!
To: GeneD
How quickly they forget!

"..Gaulist and thus was very much against the surrender to Germany and, in fact, took up arms against the Nazis even before the U.S...."Ya, after they let Poland get it in the neck and then coward, shivering in bunkers waiting like rabbits for their turn. Lets see, more and better armor, more soldiers, defensive bunkers unseen since the Pharoses built the Pyramids, and the Germans overrun them in days, they then surrender without a fight and drink and party in Paris till the Anglos come. Yup, frign gneisses.
